Lot 4082
GERMANY. Salzburg. Medal (Gold, 27 mm, 10.28 g, 12 h), in the size of three ducats. Dated 1748, but a 20th century fantasy issue. SALISBURG•S:SED•APOS•LEGAT•GERM•PRIM•17 - 48• Coat of arms of Salzburg and Andreas Jakob Graf von Dietrichstein; two hallmarks above. Rev. ✠SS•RVDBERTVS•ET•VIRGILIVS •PATRONI•SALISBVRGENSES St. Rupert sitting at left with a salt box at left hand, and St. Virgil sitting at right facing with the abbey St. Peter of Salzburg, both holding a crozier. Very minor scratches on the obverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.

This 20th-century medal integrates elements from two historic coins from Salzburg. The obverse features a Taler issued in 1748 by prince-archbishop Andreas Jakob Graf von Dietrichstein (Zöttl 2858), while the reverse showcases a Halbtaler minted between 1687 and 1708 under prince-archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein (Zöttl 2182-2193).
